Ghost tours haunting, historical

Melissa Piche enjoys telling a ghost story.

And now she's doing it on a more frequent basis, as most weekends this autumn she has shed light on some of the darker secrets of downtown Watkinsville.

Piche, who lives in Watkinsville, has started her own business of giving ghost tours.

But she said the tours are more than tales of hauntings, as they include stories of the town's history that is just as fascinating.

"There's a lot of history," she said recently. "That's really what it's about, because the ghost stories are tied into the history of the town."

Few people might know that one of the downtown buildings hosted a mortuary, or that the Eagle Tavern was billed in a book published a few years back as one of the most haunted places in North Georgia.

Piche, a mother of two and also a portrait artist, said she still is involved in researching the town's history and still is collecting ghost stories.

Piche does a walking tour of the town that takes 75 to 90 minutes.

"I start at the Eagle Tavern and its history, the (ghost) investigations there, and I go to the jail and talk about the lynching (that occurred in the early 20th century) and things that happened there," she said. "I kind of go through a historical timeline of the different places we go to
